Tencent Cements Mobile Gaming Dominance as Chinese Publishers Capture 43% of Global Revenue

Chinese mobile game publishers accounted for nearly half of the world's top-grossing mobile revenues in April 2026, generating approximately RMB 16.2 billion (US$2.25 billion) as industry titans leverage aggressive live-operations and casual-strategy exports to offset broader macroeconomic headwinds.

Data released by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reveals that 37 Chinese publishers entered the global top 100 revenue chart, commanding a 43.4% market share. The figures, which exclude third-party Android stores in China, underscore a structural shift: Chinese gaming entities are increasingly relying on deep monetization of mature intellectual properties (IPs) and targeted overseas expansion in high-ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) markets like Japan to sustain margin growth.

Initial market feedback suggests that investors are pricing in a stabilized outlook for the sector. The concentration of revenue among top-tier players indicates high barriers to entry, while the rapid scaling of niche genres like narrative-driven merge games proves that mid-sized studios can still secure lucrative global footholds.

Tencent Fortifies Domestic Moat as New Franchises Scale

Tencent retained its position as the world’s highest-grossing publisher, posting a 7% month-on-month revenue increase. The Shenzhen-based conglomerate demonstrated stringent pipeline execution by monopolizing the top three spots on China’s iOS revenue chart with Honor of KingsPeacekeeper Elite, and Delta Force.

The performance of Delta Force serves as a critical indicator of Tencent's shooter-genre monetization capability, with the title hitting a historical daily revenue peak on April 17 following a new season launch, driving a 44% monthly revenue surge. Furthermore, Tencent’s ability to incubate new cash cows was validated by the March 2026 release of Roco Kingdom: World. Backed by aggressive in-game events, the title saw a 140% revenue jump in April, breaking into the domestic top five and alleviating investor concerns over the company's reliance on aging legacy titles.

Mid-Core Exports Propel Overseas Revenue Growth

Beyond the domestic market, Chinese publishers are dominating the global strategy and casual-hybrid sectors. DianDian Interactive maintained its rank as the second-largest publisher globally. The firm’s flagship title, Whiteout Survival, capitalized on its two-year anniversary in April 2026 to push domestic iOS daily run-rates to the number two spot, trailing only Honor of Kings, and lifting monthly revenue by 15%.

DianDian’s portfolio diversification is yielding tangible overseas dividends. Its newer strategy title, Kingshot, recorded a 6% global revenue increase, surpassing Whiteout Survival in international markets and pushing its cumulative global revenue past the US$1.2 billion threshold.

Simultaneously, the "merge" genre has emerged as a high-margin export category. Oakever Games broke into the top 24 publishers for the first time, driven by a 17% revenue increase. The studio's flagship Mystery Town: Merge Games generated over US$12 million in April (+22%), proving that female-oriented, narrative-driven mechanics can secure highly profitable, low-churn user bases in Western markets. Happibits also capitalized on this trend, with its December 2025 release Food Stars: Merge and Cook climbing 37% in revenue to rank 11th globally in the merge category.

Aggressive Live-Ops Trigger Exponential Revenue Spikes

The April data highlights the extreme volatility and upside potential generated by targeted live-operations (Live-Ops) and IP collaborations, particularly in the anime, comic, and games (ACG) sector.

Yostar executed the most aggressive climb, jumping 19 spots to rank 9th globally after a 170% revenue explosion. This was engineered entirely through the Japanese market, where its legacy title Arknights saw a 290% revenue spike following a major spring update, while Mahjong Soul recorded a massive 606% surge triggered by a crossover event with the Sword Art Online franchise.

Similarly, miHoYo demonstrated the sustained earning power of its ACG portfolio. Honkai: Star Rail celebrated its third anniversary in April 2026 with the release of version 4.2. A targeted content drop on April 22 propelled the game to the top of the global mobile revenue chart for the day, resulting in a 160% month-on-month revenue increase in the Chinese iOS market and securing the 9th position overall.
