Li Auto's i6 SUV Matches Tesla Model Y in High-Speed Emergency Obstacle Test
Li Auto has released test footage showing its upcoming i6 electric SUV performing at comparable levels to Tesla's Model Y in high-speed emergency obstacle avoidance trials, as the Chinese automaker prepares for its Friday product launch.
Company CEO Li Xiang posted on social media on September 23, stating that the i6 has now "delivered its answer" after Tesla's Model Y previously challenged competitors to make comparisons. The test video, shared by Li Auto's head of product Li Xinyang, demonstrates both vehicles navigating emergency obstacle avoidance at 120 kilometers per hour under international testing standards.
The high-speed emergency obstacle test represents one of the most demanding assessments of vehicle dynamic performance, evaluating stability under extreme conditions. Visual evidence from the trials showed the i6's body dynamics performing on par with the Tesla Model Y during the maneuvers.
Li Auto emphasized the comparison serves as an internal benchmark rather than a competitive challenge, designed to verify whether the i6 meets the development team's performance targets. "The i6 is a new-format five-seat SUV designed for young consumers who want both spacious comfort and an engaging driving experience," Li Xinyang explained, noting the significant engineering focus placed on handling characteristics during development.
The timing of this demonstration appears strategically positioned ahead of Tesla's recent market push with the Model Y. Li Xiang had previously responded to Tesla's competitive positioning by suggesting consumers consider the i6 for five-seat pure electric SUV needs.
This performance validation could strengthen Li Auto's competitive position in China's premium electric SUV segment, where the company faces intensifying competition from both international and domestic manufacturers. The official i6 launch event scheduled for Friday is expected to provide comprehensive specifications and pricing details for the new model.
