XPeng Flagship MPV Delivery Wait Hits Eight Weeks on Order Surge

XPeng is grappling with extended delivery lead times for its latest flagship multi-purpose vehicle following a sudden surge in orders that has outstripped initially projected production capacity.

The Chinese electric vehicle maker’s official app on Nov. 27 showed wait times for the X9 Super Range-Extended Ultra edition extending to between six and eight weeks for certain colors. This marks a two-week increase from the prior week and sets a new record for the longest waiting period since the model’s debut.

In response to the backlog, the company has issued urgent notifications to its supply chain partners to secure materials for an additional 5,000 units before the end of 2025. The move aims to stabilize delivery rhythms against the stronger-than-anticipated demand.

The order intake is heavily skewed toward high-end configurations, with the premium Ultra version accounting for the vast majority of sales. The surge is particularly notable in northern China, where the vehicle’s range-extender technology addresses consumer concerns regarding battery performance in cold climates.

Supply Chain Adjustments

To mitigate the bottleneck, XPeng is aggressively ramping up resource procurement. Reports indicate the automaker sent a "Supply Capability Guarantee Notification" to key suppliers, demanding the emergency allocation of 5,000 sets of components by year-end.

The company is simultaneously optimizing its manufacturing processes. Measures include increasing single-shift production capacity and utilizing air freight to shorten transportation times for critical parts. XPeng has also introduced customer care policies, such as points gifting and priority scheduling, to manage user expectations during the delay.

Sales Mix and Regional Demand

The X9 Super Range-Extended edition, which officially launched on Nov. 20, saw confirmed orders break the model series' single-day record within one hour. Data reveals a strong preference for the top-tier specification, with the 1602 Ultra version—priced at RMB 329,800 (US$45,360)—accounting for approximately 80% of total orders.

Geographically, orders from northern China have exceeded 50% for the first time. The vehicle’s dual-power system, which combines electric drive with a gasoline generator, effectively mitigates range anxiety caused by battery degradation in low temperatures, making it a preferred choice for winter driving in colder regions. The model targets both family and business segments with its interior space and smart configuration.

Subsidy Guarantees

To prevent order cancellations due to the delays, XPeng has implemented a policy to protect customers from potential subsidy losses. Users who lock in their orders by Dec. 31 are eligible for a purchase tax subsidy of up to RMB 15,000 (US$2,063).

Crucially, the company stated that if invoicing is delayed until 2026 due to production or shipping issues on XPeng's end, it will subsidize the difference through a reduction in the final vehicle payment.

Market Outlook

Industry observers note that the delivery lag highlights both the robust demand for premium new energy MPVs and the fragility of the supply chain during periods of rapid expansion. While the current backlog poses a challenge, analysts expect the delivery cycle to shorten and return to normal levels once the emergency capacity of 5,000 units is released and supply chain bottlenecks are resolved.
