XPeng Launches Revamped P7 Sedan Starting at $30,300 to Undercut Tesla, Xiaomi

XPeng Inc. has launched its redesigned P7 electric sedan with a surprisingly low starting price, escalating the intense competition in China's crowded electric vehicle market and positioning the model to directly challenge rivals including Tesla Inc. and Xiaomi Corp.

The new P7 was unveiled Tuesday with a starting price of RMB 219,800 yuan (US$30,500), a figure significantly below analysts' expectations and the sticker prices of key competitors. The Chinese automaker said mass deliveries have already commenced, a move aimed at capitalizing on immediate demand and capturing market share from rivals with longer wait times.

XPeng management revealed that pre-orders for the new P7 have surpassed those for any of its existing models. Analysts at Morgan Stanley described the pricing strategy as "more offensive than expected" in a research note, suggesting that initial sales forecasts may now be too conservative.

The launch is a critical move for XPeng as it seeks to build on strong sales momentum from the first half of 2025 and achieve record quarterly deliveries by year-end. The company is banking on the revamped sedan to be a "dark horse" that can help it reach a monthly sales target of 40,000 units in September.

An Offensive Pricing Strategy

The new P7 is offered in four versions, with prices ranging from RMB 219,800 yuan to RMB 301,800 yuan. The entry-level price is well below the RMB 230,000 to RMB 250,000 range that the market had anticipated, placing it RMB 26,000 below the Xiaomi SU7 Pro and RMB 16,000 below the base Tesla Model 3.

According to Morgan Stanley, this aggressive pricing is set to put significant pressure on competitors in the same segment. The investment bank noted that despite the competitive pricing, the new P7 is still expected to achieve double-digit profit margins once production scales, citing the company's cost control capabilities.

High-Spec as Standard

XPeng has emphasized that the aggressive price does not come at the expense of features. "There are no low-end versions; every version is a top configuration," Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng stated at the launch event.

All models of the new P7 come equipped with an 800V/5C ultra-fast charging platform, an AR-HUD (augmented reality head-up display), and three AI Turing smart driving chips delivering a total of 2250 TOPS of computing power. The vehicle also features XPeng's VLA (Vision-Language-Action) advanced driver-assistance system. The company said the VLA system will receive its first major over-the-air update in September, with a generational upgrade planned for the end of 2025.

A 'Dark Horse' for Sales

Analysts are optimistic about the new P7's sales potential, a sentiment bolstered by the company's statements about strong pre-order volumes. With mass deliveries already underway, XPeng is in a position to win over customers who might otherwise face long waits for competing models.

Morgan Stanley said its previous monthly sales forecast of 3,000 to 5,000 units now appears to be a "very low bar." Strong sales from the P7 are seen as crucial for XPeng to hit its ambitious short-term targets, including record sales in the fourth quarter. He Xiaopeng has set a goal for the new P7 to become one of the top three best-selling new energy vehicles in the premium segment priced above RMB 200,000 yuan.

However, analysts also pointed out that achieving these goals will depend heavily on the company's ability to ramp up production capacity in the coming months to meet the anticipated high demand.
