AI Pet Startup Ropet, Led by Ex-ByteDance Designer, Secures New Funding to Tackle Urban Loneliness
Ropet MengYou Intelligent Technology has secured tens of millions of yuan in A1 funding as the Chinese startup challenges conventional wisdom in AI companion devices by creating a pet robot that deliberately doesn't speak.
The Beijing-based company, led by CEO He Jiabin, raised the funding round from Beijing AI Industry Investment Fund with participation from Peak Capital, defying the industry trend of voice-enabled AI companions. The startup's cat-like robot has generated over 50 million yen in crowdfunding on Japan's Makuake platform after launching in August.
He Jiabin argues that urban professionals don't want to talk to AI companions, describing loneliness as a "weak moment" experienced by adults under social pressure. The company's research across more than 1,000 users revealed that dialogue isn't essential for emotional companionship, particularly among female users aged 20-40.
The funding comes as the AI companion hardware market remains nascent, with Ropet targeting sales of several tens of thousands of units in 2025 and 100,000-150,000 units in 2026.
Product Design Challenges Voice-First AI Trend
Ropet's core product philosophy contradicts the current AI hardware trend of integrating large language models for conversation. The furry, cat-like device maintains a 39-degree temperature and uses three internal sensors to respond to human touch with expressions and sounds, but avoids human speech entirely.
"Companionship has no necessary connection with dialogue," He explained. "Making a hardware device with unique value doesn't come from large model dialogue capabilities, but from making it more like a real creature with perception and stress responses."
The company conducted over ten user research sessions and found that most users, particularly women, don't want to speak to robot companions except when testing AI boundaries or seeking functional information. This insight led Ropet to focus on creating a device that needs care rather than providing services.
The startup has sold nearly 10,000 units over six months, primarily through overseas markets before planning a domestic China launch in November 2025.
Proprietary "Pet Brain" Technology Powers Emotional Responses
Ropet's competitive advantage lies in its proprietary "Pet Brain" decision model, built on Transformer architecture with edge-side multimodal capabilities including vision and voice processing. The system analyzes user behavior and generates appropriate emotional responses without relying on external large language model APIs.
The device creates a gamified pet-raising experience where users can adopt, name, and develop the robot's personality over seven days. Users report forming emotional attachments, with some expressing distress when device malfunctions erase accumulated interaction data.
The company tracks three key metrics: high activation rates, high interaction rates, and low return rates. User feedback indicates the device successfully triggers caregiving instincts, with some customers treating it as a child-like companion requiring daily attention.
Market Strategy Avoids Venture Scaling Playbook
Unlike typical hardware startups, Ropet deliberately avoids burning cash for rapid user acquisition, focusing instead on organic growth among core users who demonstrate genuine engagement with the product.
"This type of product cannot be subsidized through money-burning in the early stages," He stated. "The AI companionship category is still in the exploration phase of real user needs and rapid product iteration."
The company projects sales of several tens of thousands of units in 2025, positioning 100,000 annual units as a major milestone for the category. Revenue potential extends beyond hardware sales to include accessories, insurance, after-sales services, and software upgrades, similar to Japanese competitor Lovot, which generates 60% of revenue from recurring user payments.
Ropet plans to collaborate with IP licensors rather than compete directly with entertainment giants, noting that many popular characters like Pikachu don't speak, making the non-verbal approach compatible with existing intellectual property.
