China Mobile Backs Tactile Sensor Maker Daimeng as Humanoid Robot Race Heats Up

Daimeng Robot, a developer of tactile sensors for humanoid robots, has secured over RMB 100 million yuan (US$13.7 million) in a strategic financing round to accelerate the mass production of low-cost sensors. The investment highlights a shift in the diverse robotics sector for 2025, moving from dynamic mobility to fine manipulation capabilities required for industrial productivity.

The latest funding round was exclusively invested by the China Mobile Chain Chief Fund, an investment vehicle under the state-owned telecommunications giant China Mobile. This marks the fourth financing round for Daimeng in two years, bringing its total capital raised to hundreds of millions of yuan and setting a record for angel-round financing in the tactile sensor sector. The capital will fuel product development, global expansion, and the construction of its VTLA (Vision-Tactile-Language-Action) models.

Daimeng is disrupting the market by offering a viable alternative to the complex optical tactile solutions that have long dominated the field. By utilizing a single-color optical route rather than the traditional tri-color approach, the company has driven the cost of sensors down to RMB 1,299 yuan (US$178), significantly lower than the international average of RMB 6,000 to 7,000.

The deal underscores the growing urgency among investors to solve the "fine manipulation" bottleneck in embodied AI. While earlier robot iterations focused on walking and running, industry attention has pivoted to dexterity and grasp stability. The backing from China Mobile suggests that tactile sensing is becoming a critical infrastructure layer for the commercial deployment of humanoid robots.

Strategic Ecosystem and Capital

The involvement of China Mobile goes beyond capital injection. As a strategic investor, the telecommunications giant brings a comprehensive "AI+" ecosystem, including computing power, cloud infrastructure, and extensive industrial scenarios. The partnership aims to support Daimeng in deploying its multimodal models and scaling its technology.

Daimeng’s investor roster now includes a mix of technology giants, state-owned capital, and venture capital firms. Previous backers include Lenovo, China Merchants Venture Capital, and Kunzhong. This diverse shareholder base reflects a consensus across different capital sectors that tactile sensing is the next critical variable for the industry.

Engineering Disruption and Cost Reduction

For over a decade, the global standard for visual-tactile sensing closely followed the "GelSight" route developed by MIT, which relies on tri-color lights. While effective, this method often requires high computing power and suffers from structural complexity and fragility—issues that have hindered mass adoption. Daimeng has diverged from this path by adopting a single-color light solution paired with pattern tracking.

According to Daimeng’s research lead, Dr. Du, the single-color approach allows for lower power consumption, reduced heat generation, and a simpler mechanical structure while maintaining high performance. The company’s sensors currently achieve a stable refresh rate of 120Hz, with the potential to reach higher frequencies without the thermal issues associated with color cameras.

This engineering pivot has enabled aggressive pricing. In a market where domestic competitors price products between RMB 2,000 and 3,000, Daimeng has lowered the entry price to RMB 1,299 yuan (US$178). The company claims to have achieved mass production volume in the tens of thousands, with products already certified by CE and FCC standards for export to increasing numbers of customers in Europe and the United States.

Solving the Edge Computing Bottleneck

As tactile sensors become standard in robot dexterity, processing the massive influx of data has created a new challenge for robot central processing units. Transmitting high-resolution, high-frame-rate data to a robot's "brain" consumes significant bandwidth and computing resources.

To address this, Daimeng released the DM-Flux, an edge AI computing platform, alongside its new sensor lineup in November. The compact module, measuring just 68mm by 58mm, provides up to 10 TOPS of computing power and can support up to five visual-tactile sensors simultaneously. This "plug-and-play" solution acts as a "tactile cerebellum," processing data at the edge to relieve the load on the robot’s main controller, making it easier for downstream manufacturers to integrate tactile sensing into their systems.

From Lab to Production Line

The overriding theme for the robotics sector in 2025 is the transition from laboratory demonstrations to authentic industrial application. Industry feedback indicates that tactile sensing is no longer optional; it is essential for robots to know what they are holding and to adjust their grip force dynamically.

Daimeng’s strategy focuses on availability and reliability rather than theoretical performance ceilings. By securing the supply chain and lowering costs, the company aims to transform tactile sensors into standard, scalable infrastructure. The ultimate value of these sensors will be determined as humanoid robot manufacturers and embodied AI developers integrate them into real-world workflows, allowing the technology to iterate based on actual industrial feedback.
