Li Auto Unveils i6 Electric SUV Targeting Younger Consumers Ahead of September 26 Launch

Li Auto officially announced its new five-seat electric SUV, the i6, positioning it as a "new-form factor" vehicle that will launch on September 26. The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer is targeting younger consumers with what CEO Li Xiang describes as a third design approach in the competitive five-seat electric SUV segment.

The i6 represents Li Auto's push into the mid-size pure electric SUV market, diverging from its previous focus on extended-range electric vehicles. Li Xiang stated on social media that the i6 will be "the most suitable model for young people" in Li Auto's lineup, featuring unique styling and innovative concepts that distinguish it from existing competitors.

The vehicle incorporates advanced technology including 800V high-voltage architecture and next-generation 5C lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL and Sunwoda, enabling 10-minute charging for 500 kilometers of range. Li Auto plans to hold the launch event at its Beijing headquarters rather than a professional venue, reflecting the model's positioning toward younger demographics.

The announcement comes as Chinese EV manufacturers intensify competition in the premium electric SUV segment, with Li Auto seeking to establish a distinct design language alongside established players like Tesla's Model Y and emerging competitors such as Xiaomi's SU7.

Design and Engineering Focus

The i6 adopts Li Auto's current design philosophy with a shark-inspired integrated body shape and dual-tone color scheme that balances technological appeal with sportiness. The aerodynamic design aims to reduce energy consumption and extend driving range, featuring a closed front end, wraparound LED daytime running lights, hidden door handles, and multi-spoke wheels.

Li Auto emphasizes the vehicle's low center of gravity design for enhanced agility and driving dynamics. The company claims the i6 achieves best-in-class torsional rigidity of 52,014 Newton-meters per degree, combining sporty handling with comfort.

Despite its compact exterior dimensions of 4.95 meters in length with a 3-meter wheelbase, the i6 provides 3.3 meters of longitudinal interior space, optimizing the balance between vehicle size and practicality for family use.

Performance and Technology Specifications

Based on regulatory filings, the i6 will offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The rear-drive version delivers peak power of 250kW, while the all-wheel drive variant combines a 150kW front motor with a 250kW rear motor for 400kW total system output.

Range capabilities vary by configuration, with rear-drive models achieving 710-720 kilometers and all-wheel drive versions reaching 660 kilometers. The 800V high-voltage platform supports rapid charging, with the 5C battery technology enabling significant range recovery in short charging sessions.

The vehicle includes LiDAR sensors and supports urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) functionality, positioning it competitively in the intelligent driving segment. Additional smart features and comfort configurations will be revealed during the September 26 launch event.
