Pony.ai Launches Singapore Robotaxi Service in Global Expansion Push
Autonomous driving startup Pony.ai has launched its first passenger-carrying Robotaxi service in Singapore in partnership with local transport giant ComfortDelGro, marking a critical expansion of its commercially proven Chinese operational model into Southeast Asia.
The invite-only service, which began operations on April 7, targets the persistent "last-mile" commuter bottleneck in Singapore's Punggol district. Operating along a 12-kilometer fixed route, the service links high-density residential areas like Punggol Northshore and Waterway Sunrise with key commercial nodes and mass transit stations. The full circuit takes approximately 55 minutes, trimming up to 15 minutes off traditional public transit travel times.
This deployment represents the first commercial realization of a strategic partnership forged between the two companies in September 2025, transitioning into passenger service after seven months of localized road testing.
Targeting Global Scale Post-Profitability
Pony.ai’s entry into the Singapore passenger market underscores a broader strategic pivot from localized testing to aggressive global commercialization. Following its 2025 financial disclosures, the company confirmed it had achieved single-vehicle operational profitability in the Chinese mega-cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Armed with its sixth-generation autonomous driving system and operating under permits from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), Pony.ai aims to deploy more than 3,000 Robotaxis across 20 cities globally by the end of 2026. The company projects that overseas markets, with Singapore serving as a primary launchpad, will account for nearly half of this total fleet volume.
Replicating the Guangzhou Blueprint
The operational framework for the Punggol route directly imports the joint blueprint developed by Pony.ai and ComfortDelGro during their initial pilot programs in Guangzhou. By integrating autonomous vehicles with an established legacy transport operator's network, the companies mitigate the capital-intensive hurdles of entering foreign mobility markets.
Corporate representatives indicated that the current invite-only trial will dictate the timeline for a full public rollout. The localized data gathered during this phase will be crucial for refining algorithmic responses to tropical weather conditions and Singapore's specific urban traffic dynamics before expanding city-wide.
