Xiaomi Sets March 19 Launch for 2026 SU7, Betting 800V Upgrade Can Defend Pricing Power
Xiaomi will unveil the 2026 SU7 on March 19, positioning a broad powertrain-and-chassis upgrade—rather than a redesign—as the lever to sustain margins in China’s intensifying EV price war.
The company on March 16 confirmed the launch date after more than two months of marketing build-up and released additional specifications covering range, charging and driver-assistance hardware. Xiaomi earlier announced pre-sale prices of RMB 229,900 (US$31,930) for the Standard, RMB 259,900 (US$36,100) for the Pro, and RMB 309,900 (US$43,040) for the Max—up RMB 14,000 (US$1,940), RMB 14,000 (US$1,940), and RMB 10,000 (US$1,390), respectively, versus the 2024 model-year equivalents.
Investors and suppliers will focus on whether Xiaomi uses the launch event to trim final prices below the pre-sale tags—a common China-market practice—and how that decision affects the perceived gap between the 2026 and 2024 cars.
Pricing Upgrades Test Xiaomi’s Ability to Hold the Line
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun has said the 2026 SU7 brings “material configuration upgrades,” framing higher prices as unavoidable. In China’s EV market, that stance signals an attempt to preserve pricing power by shifting the comparison set from “cheapest new EV” to “highest-spec at a given price,” a strategy that can stabilize gross margin but raises the bar on delivery volume.
The pre-sale increases are modest in absolute terms but meaningful for the mid-to-high-end battery EV segment, where competitors frequently use rebates, limited-time discounts and financing subsidies to trigger order spikes. Xiaomi’s final pricing will therefore act as a read-through on how confident it is in demand elasticity for a refreshed SU7 line.
Range Gains Show Architecture, Not Battery, Doing the Work
Xiaomi disclosed CLTC range figures of 720 km (Standard), 902 km (Pro) and 835 km (Max). Versus the 2024 versions, that implies gains of 20 km, 72 km and 35 km for the corresponding trims.
Network filing information shows battery capacities of 73 kWh, 96.3 kWh and 101.7 kWh—only marginally different from the prior 73.6 kWh, 94.3 kWh and 101 kWh packs. The mismatch between small capacity changes and larger range improvements points to efficiency gains from an all-trim 800V electrical architecture and an upgraded battery management system (BMS), a combination that can cut charging losses and improve real-world usability without materially increasing cell cost.
Faster Charging Raises the Spec Bar in the Model 3 Fight
Xiaomi said the Standard and Pro trims support 3.5C charging, while the Max reaches 5.2C. Based on those rates, peak charging power is roughly 255.5 kW (Standard), 337 kW (Pro) and 529 kW (Max), up from the 2024 model year.
If the on-road experience matches those headline numbers, Xiaomi would shift competition away from sticker price and toward “time cost”—a critical lever in China’s urban markets where fast-charging availability and queue times increasingly shape purchase decisions. The move also increases requirements on upstream components such as high-voltage power electronics and thermal management, areas where supplier qualification and yield can influence ramp speed after launch.
Standardized Motors and Chassis Updates Target Handling and Consistency
Xiaomi confirmed the V6s Plus motor becomes standard across the range. It disclosed the Max’s V6s Plus peak power at 288 kW, with the same motor delivering 235 kW in the Standard and Pro.
Chassis changes include a wider 265 mm rear tire specification across trims and an upgraded front braking system with four-piston fixed calipers. Pro and Max versions are expected to retain a closed dual-chamber air suspension plus CDC adjustable damping setup previously disclosed. Collectively, these changes aim to improve braking and handling without relying on cosmetic refreshes—an approach that can reduce tooling disruption while giving sales staff tangible spec-sheet advantages.
Full-Stack Driver Assistance Becomes a Default, Not an Option
Xiaomi said lidar becomes standard across all versions, computing power is unified at 700 TOPS, and both 4D millimeter-wave radar and the “HAD full version” driver-assistance system are standard.
Bundling advanced driver-assistance hardware into the base trims tightens cost control levers—there is less room to use low-spec variants to advertise entry prices—but it can simplify manufacturing and inventory while aligning the product with China’s fast-moving ADAS feature expectations. Xiaomi also highlighted safety updates spanning body structure, battery protection and airbags, and said door handles carry triple protection and comply with new national standards—an area likely to be emphasized given past public debate around vehicle safety since the 2024 SU7 launch.
Xiaomi’s central question heading into the March 19 reveal is whether a deeper “under-the-skin” refresh—800V across the lineup, faster charging, standardized lidar and higher compute—can keep the SU7 competitive against Tesla’s Model 3 and domestic rivals while supporting a higher price baseline in 2026.
