China Successfully Tests 2-Ton eVTOL for Cross-City Highland Logistics
A Chinese-developed electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft with a two-ton capacity has successfully completed a cross-city cargo test flight in the mountainous terrain of Guizhou province. The trial marks a significant breakthrough in the application of heavy-lift aerial logistics within high-altitude and complex geographical regions.
The aircraft, loaded with emergency medical supplies and specialty agricultural products, took off from Xiuwen County in Guiyang. It landed forty minutes later at Jiuzhou General Airport in Huangping County, covering a distance of 118 kilometers. The successful flight served as a field verification of the low-altitude logistics capabilities required for plateau environments.
Unlike traditional ground transport, the eVTOL enables point-to-point delivery with zero carbon emissions. Kong Xubing, deputy general manager of Guiyang Low Altitude Industry Development, noted that transportation in Guizhou’s mountainous areas has historically been difficult. However, with advancements in low-altitude technology, the electric aircraft—which requires no runway—can reduce transportation time for agricultural and emergency goods by more than 80 percent.
The aircraft operates on pure electric power, offering vertical takeoff capabilities similar to helicopters but with lower noise levels and greater environmental benefits. Following this successful test, the Guiyang-Huangping route is expected to begin normalized logistics operations within 2025, creating a new model for multi-dimensional mountain transportation.
