China’s Changying-8 Makes First Flight, Signaling Push Toward Heavy-Lift Cargo Drones

Changying-8 (NORINCO LUCA), a large unmanned cargo aircraft dubbed an “unmanned aerial heavy truck,” completed its maiden flight on March 31 at Zhengzhou Shangjie Airport in Henan province, according to CCTV News. The test marked what the broadcaster described as the world’s largest cargo drone to achieve a first flight, highlighting China’s progress in heavy-lift, intelligent unmanned transport platforms.

The aircraft accelerated smoothly along the runway and lifted off after a 280-meter takeoff roll, before completing validations of key systems including intelligent flight control, avionics, electromechanical components, power and fuel, and flight handling qualities, the report said. After about 30 minutes in the air, it landed precisely and steadily, completing the inaugural mission.

CCTV News said the flight relied primarily on an intelligent system with human monitoring. Stable flight attitude and normal system performance were cited as evidence of an “important breakthrough” in the development of a 7-ton-class intelligent unmanned transport platform.

Changying-8’s specifications position it for heavy logistics use cases. It has a maximum payload of 3.5 tonnes, can operate with a takeoff and landing distance of less than 500 meters, and is designed for deployment in demanding environments such as simple dirt runways, plateau regions and islands. Its maximum range exceeds 3,000 kilometers, according to the report.

The successful first flight is expected to accelerate the next steps toward airworthiness certification, mass deliveries and commercialization, CCTV News said. Those milestones will be closely watched by investors assessing how quickly China’s “low-altitude economy,” now moving toward scaled applications, can translate demonstrators into operational logistics networks and recurring revenue models for unmanned transport solutions.
