DJI Unveils Automated Battery-Swapping Drone Dock to Target Industrial Infrastructure

SZ DJI Technology Co. introduced its first automated battery-swapping drone platform, slashing turnaround times from 30 minutes to 25 seconds to target high-frequency industrial and emergency infrastructure operations.

Released on Oct. 15, 2026, the DJI Dock 4 combo—priced at RMB 167,999 (US$23,333)—includes the docking station, a Matrice 5TD drone, a DJI O4 ground station, and four batteries. The system marks a structural shift in the commercial drone sector, transitioning from hardware-centric sales to providing continuous-operation, unattended infrastructure. By eliminating charging downtime, the platform targets utility operators, emergency responders, and security contractors demanding uninterrupted aerial surveillance.

The pricing strategy, which distinctly separates baseline hardware costs from software, maintenance, and service fees, indicates DJI’s accelerated push toward a recurring revenue model within the enterprise sector. Industry analysts view the 25-second swap capability as a critical threshold for fully autonomous fleet operations, fundamentally altering the unit economics of remote industrial inspections.

Battery Swapping Overcomes Operational Bottlenecks

The Dock 4 replaces traditional drone charging protocols with an automated mechanical swap system. During the 25-second physical battery exchange, the system simultaneously uploads flight data, allowing the drone to immediately launch for subsequent missions. For continuous patrol requirements, the dock supports dual-drone automated rotation.

Engineered for harsh environments, the platform operates in temperatures ranging from -40℃ to 50℃. The system supports remote activation without an on-site pilot, deploying the drone at speeds up to 21 meters per second while streaming real-time aerial feeds to command centers.

AI Integration Automates Industrial Inspections

The paired Matrice 5TD drone delivers a 59-minute maximum flight time and supports a 450-gram payload across three external ports, accommodating accessories like megaphones and spotlights. DJI has heavily upgraded the sensor suite to digitize infrastructure inspection. The 11x telephoto lens can read vehicle license plates at 400 meters and identify millimeter-level bolt defects at 100 meters. A high-resolution thermal camera (up to 2560×2048 via super-resolution) detects equipment heat anomalies and insulator damage, while a 4K full-color night vision system captures data without external illumination.

Flight safety is managed by an integrated millimeter-wave radar, LiDAR, and a six-way visual sensing system, providing anti-jamming capabilities and high-wind return protocols.

At the software layer, onboard AI processes real-time identification of 17 target classifications, including vehicles and smoke. Integrated with DJI’s FlightHub 2 platform, operators can execute text-to-image searches to locate specific targets. The system automates the entire response chain—from generating alerts via SMS or email to executing autonomous tracking and generating post-mission comparative 3D models.
