Huawei Patents AR/VR Glasses With Detachable Smart Ring Controller

Huawei Technologies has filed a patent for a new augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) device that features a detachable smart ring designed to function as a controller. The patent application, published by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), outlines a novel approach to user interaction in mixed reality environments.

The core of the design is a flexible ring-like strap that can be detached from the frame of the AR/VR glasses. When separated and worn on a user's finger, the ring is intended to provide advanced control for high-interaction applications. The patent indicates it would support gesture recognition, pointing, and navigation, making it suitable for complex tasks such as AR gaming or managing a virtual workspace.

According to the filing, the system offers a dual-functionality. When the ring is attached to the glasses, it allows for simpler inputs like taps and swipes for navigating menus or controlling media playback. The patent also specifies that the ring would automatically recharge while connected to the main device, eliminating the need for a separate controller and its associated charging process.

The proposed device is described as having a modular structure. To enable its functions, it would likely incorporate components such as magnetic parts for attachment, wireless communication modules, and inertial sensors to accurately detect a user's hand and finger movements.
