Unitree Partners with Jay Chou-Linked Company to Launch Consumer Robot Dog

Unitree Robotics and Star Plus Legend Holdings Limited have unveiled their jointly developed "Megastar Dog," a consumer-grade quadruped robot that made its public debut at the Shanghai Tourism Festival parade on September 13. The collaboration combines Unitree's robotics expertise with Star Plus Legend's IP development capabilities, marking a strategic push into the consumer robotics market that IDC valued at over $180 million globally in 2024.

The "Megastar Dog" features a companion-focused design with white and orange coloring, drooping ears, black goggles, and a silver collar, distinguishing it from Unitree's more industrial-looking existing consumer models. Star Plus Legend Holdings Limited, known for creating IP properties including the "Jay Chou Student" character for Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou in 2019, brings entertainment industry experience to the partnership.

Consumer quadruped robots accounted for 72.1% of global market shipments in 2024, according to IDC data, presenting significant growth opportunities for manufacturers seeking to expand beyond industrial applications. Unitree sold 23,700 quadruped robots in 2024, with the category representing 65% of company revenues.

Strategic Partnership Targets IP-Driven Market Entry

Under their cooperation agreement announced in July, Star Plus Legend will handle IP planning, design, AI interaction, and global marketing strategy, while Unitree manages technical development, hardware production, and application software. Both companies will jointly oversee product promotion and channel sales.

The partnership addresses a key gap in Unitree's consumer portfolio, where existing models like Go1 and Go2 maintain a more mechanical, metallic appearance despite their companion functionality. The companies aim to create products with "strong IP attributes" to differentiate in a market where consumer adoption remains limited.

Unitree has established itself as a leading quadruped robot manufacturer with both industrial models (B1, B2, A2 series) and consumer variants already available on platforms like JD.com. The company's industrial-grade robots serve commercial applications, while consumer models focus on companionship and entertainment functions.

Consumer Robotics Market Expansion

The global quadruped robot market's consumer segment dominance reflects growing demand for entertainment and companion robots rather than purely functional industrial equipment. Unitree's pivot toward more appealing consumer designs follows successful IP-driven product launches in other categories, including the recent popularity of character-based collectibles.

The "Megastar Dog" demonstrates capabilities including dancing movements and interactive behaviors designed to enhance its appeal as a pet-like companion. While detailed specifications remain undisclosed, the robot's design emphasizes approachability through softer aesthetics and playful functionality.

Star Plus Legend's expertise in IP creation and retail operations complements Unitree's technical capabilities, potentially creating a template for future robotics industry partnerships. The collaboration reflects broader industry trends toward consumer-focused product development as robotics companies seek to expand beyond traditional industrial and research markets into mainstream consumer adoption.
