A Robotaxi operated by Chinese autonomous driving firm WeRide was involved in its first-ever collision outside of China, an incident in Abu Dhabi where the autonomous system was cleared of all fault. The collision occurred on November 12, when a privately owned, human-driven vehicle made an illegal and abrupt lane change, striking the WeRide Robotaxi. While the incident resulted in minor damage to the autonomous vehicle, no injuries were reported.

Local law enforcement in Abu Dhabi swiftly concluded its investigation, determining that the WeRide Robotaxi operated without error and was not responsible for the crash. The human driver of the other car was assigned full liability, a verdict that all parties accepted without dispute. The incident has intensified market discussion around the safety protocols and public interaction of autonomous vehicles as they become more common on international roads.

The incident occurs as WeRide, a key player in China's AV industry, accelerates its international push. The company has already secured autonomous driving licenses in seven countries and deployed vehicles in over 30 cities across 11 nations.

WeRide is actively expanding in international markets, including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Japan. The company’s global ambitions are supported by strategic investments and partnerships with major industry names such as Uber, Southeast Asian ride-hailing giant Grab, and German technology firm Bosch. These collaborations are critical to financing its expansion and integrating its technology into existing transportation networks worldwide.
