Xiaomi Confirms 17 Ultra Launch for Next Week, Emphasizing Photography Upgrades

Xiaomi announced its flagship 17 Ultra smartphone will be officially unveiled next week, with CEO Lei Jun confirming the launch in a social media post on Wednesday. Based on the company's typical release patterns, the event is expected to take place on December 25.

The announcement marks an earlier-than-usual release for Xiaomi's premium "Ultra" model this year. The company is positioning the device as a significant upgrade in mobile photography capabilities, particularly in telephoto performance.

According to the official announcement and industry reports, the 17 Ultra will feature what Xiaomi describes as "the first Leica APO-certified telephoto lens in mobile imaging," emphasizing improved chromatic aberration control and resolution. The device is rumored to include a periscope telephoto lens supporting continuous optical zoom, enabling 3x to 7x lossless zoom range. This will be paired with a 200-megapixel, 1/1.4-inch sensor for enhanced telephoto photography.

The main camera is expected to retain a one-inch sensor but switch to the OV50X sensor, which supports next-generation LOFIC technology capable of achieving over 100dB dynamic range. The ultra-wide camera specifications are likely to remain largely unchanged, continuing with a 1/2.76-inch or similar-sized sensor.

Core specifications are expected to mirror the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, including Qualcomm's fifth-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, a high-resolution flat display, ultrasonic fingerprint recognition, and premium water resistance.

The battery capacity may be reduced to 6,800mAh to accommodate enhanced camera hardware, according to reports. The device is expected to support 100W wired charging, with wireless charging speeds potentially increasing to 80W.

The 17 Ultra represents Xiaomi's continued focus on premium smartphone photography as competition intensifies in China's high-end mobile market.
