Insta360 Revenue Surges 93% as Pricing War with DJI Expands Camera Market

Insta360 posted a 93% year-on-year revenue increase in the third quarter of 2025, demonstrating resilience against aggressive price competition from DJI in the panoramic camera market. The Chinese company's quarterly revenue reached RMB 2.94 billion ($410 million), accelerating from a 62% growth rate in the previous quarter.

The battle between the two Chinese tech firms has intensified since July when Insta360 entered the drone market and DJI launched its first panoramic camera. DJI's entry into the segment triggered steep price cuts, with third-party data showing the drone maker captured 43% of the Chinese market within three months. However, the competition has expanded rather than cannibalized the sector, with both companies reporting increased app downloads and user engagement.

Market data from two separate research firms has created confusion over exact market share figures. Frost & Sullivan reported Insta360 held 75% of the global consumer panoramic camera market in Q3, while Qianzhan Intelligence gave a 49% figure. Insta360 cautioned investors about the reliability of certain third-party data during its November 4 earnings call, while emphasizing its differentiated software and hardware capabilities remain core user selection criteria.

The company's nine-month revenue reached RMB 6.61 billion ($923 million), positioning it to potentially hit RMB 10 billion in full-year sales, matching DJI's 2016 scale. Its R&D spending surged over 160% in Q3.

Price Competition Fails to Dent Market Leader

DJI's aggressive pricing strategy has failed to undermine Insta360's market position despite capturing meaningful share in China. Frost & Sullivan attributed DJI's 37.1% Chinese market share in Q3 partly to "frequent price reduction measures," yet Insta360's revenue growth actually accelerated during this period.

The company maintained its leading position on major e-commerce platforms. Its X5 panoramic camera topped Tmall's bestseller list for 21 consecutive days through the Singles' Day shopping festival. The resilience stems from product differentiation that addresses specific use cases—the X5 features interchangeable lenses, modular repair capabilities, and plugins for professional editing software including Final Cut and Adobe Premiere Pro, according to tech publication PetaPixel.

Market expansion has benefited both players. Global app downloads and monthly active users increased year-on-year for both companies across major markets including China, the US, Japan and Germany in Q3. Insta360's app downloads jumped 78% globally, with particularly sharp growth in China where competition has been most intense.

Innovation Through Pain Point Solutions

Insta360's market leadership rests on technological breakthroughs addressing fundamental user challenges. The company's signature "invisible selfie stick" feature—which uses AI algorithms and image recognition to digitally remove the mounting pole from footage—emerged from internal testing during a skiing trip and became a key differentiator.

The company tackled the industry's low-light performance limitations with its Ace Pro 2 model through a dual-chip architecture. An engineer involved in development noted the device incorporates a main processor pushing 8K resolution alongside a dedicated AI chip for night scene processing. The approach required solving complex challenges including component integration, packaging and thermal management within a palm-sized body.

The recently launched X4 Air camera demonstrates continued engineering focus on constraint optimization. Product managers disclosed the development team encountered multiple issues with image quality, power consumption and heat dissipation during design verification testing. The final device weighs just 165 grams while incorporating upgraded noise reduction algorithms, tone enhancement and portrait mode features.

Chinese Firms Dominate Global Imaging Sector

The Insta360-DJI rivalry mirrors competitive dynamics in the smartphone market, where ecosystem advantages and brand premium sustain market leaders despite aggressive competition on specifications and pricing. Apple's revenue grew from 182.8 billion in fiscal 2014 to over 400 billion in fiscal 2024, demonstrating how user experience and ecosystem lock-in preserve market position.

Industry observers see the imaging equipment competition following a similar pattern, with Insta360's software ecosystem and user experience creating switching costs that protect its position even as competitors match hardware specifications. The company's sustained R&D investment—up 160% year-on-year in Q3—positions it to maintain its technological edge while avoiding destructive price competition.

The competitive landscape has pushed the global panoramic camera market firmly into "China time," with domestic firms now setting the pace for innovation and market expansion in what was previously a niche segment.
