Xiaomi Upends Sub-Brand Strategy with Premium REDMI K90 Max

Xiaomi Group is aggressively restructuring its smartphone hierarchy with the imminent launch of the REDMI K90 Max, introducing a new top-tier classification designed to systematically disrupt the premium mobile gaming market.

Scheduled for release later this month, the device marks a structural pivot for the company's volume-driving sub-brand. For the first time, the "Max" designation will supersede the traditional "Ultra"tier within the K series. This strategic repositioning signals Xiaomi's intent to capture high-margin mobile gamers while insulating its mainline flagship series from niche hardware escalations.

Active Cooling Signals Hardware Escalation

Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi Group, confirmed the K90 Max will integrate a physical active air-cooling system alongside the industry's latest flagship processor. This hardware configuration—historically sequestered within specialized, low-volume esports handsets—represents a calculated move to eliminate thermal throttling in mainstream devices.

By engineering comprehensive optimizations across touch latency, network stability, and spatial audio, Xiaomi is transitioning the REDMI K series from a generic "flagship killer" profile to a specialized esports utility. The integration of active cooling in a broad-market device highlights the intensifying thermal demands of mobile gaming engines in 2026.

Disentangling the Pricing Matrix

The introduction of the Max tier effectively redefines REDMI's traditional market boundaries. Lu explicitly noted that the K90 Max is engineered to benchmark gaming performance against devices across all price segments, discarding the sub-brand's historical reliance on same-tier price wars.

By confirming that the K90 Max outranks the yet-to-be-released K90 Ultra, Xiaomi is deliberately stretching the REDMI price ceiling. This product sequencing—launching the highest-tier Max model first—aims to establish a premium performance anchor, allowing Xiaomi to aggressively siphon market share from dedicated gaming smartphone manufacturers before filling in the lower price brackets.
